spruik - what's 'fat' got to do with this? I had never heard the name Catherine Deveney before - she must be some sort of 'b'grade TV personality or movie 'star' trying to stir up controversy to get a little bit of notoriety. Aboriginal, my word, she is more white than anything else - but that is now called 'colourism' - and soon there 'will be a law against 'colourism' as well.

I must admit I get a bit tired of 'celebrating' what in actual fact was a defeat mostly occasioned by 3rd and 4th grade ignorant British officers' tactical errors .....and: when we have had a surfeit of death and destruction all through the 20th century far greater than that sacrifice. ... but it was a small country and a whole generation of young men left fiancees, sweethearts, mothers, widows mourning, so I get it, keep mum.

So, yes, I get it ..... I can weep for them .... not with them, because my ancestors were on the other side of the world trying to keep an ancient and tottering empire together, and their youth was sent out to fight, many also against their will.

Yes, it was a sacrifice, but mostly again a sacrifice by the old men deciding that the youth of their country have to let blood again for their ambitions whatever they are/were - mostly about power and control and a disintegrating empire, (or two or three - and the spoils were up for grabs). Nothing to do with freedom, don't kid yourself.

Some Aboriginal soldiers also went into that war and were not recognised for their service when they got back.

I mourn on ANZAC day mostly the fact that we can't seem to get by without wars and never-ending militarism, and never seem to run out of young men willing to 'sacrifice' their lives.
