The confusion is around the application of Salvation and justification. James does not argue against Salvation by faith alone but points out the fallacy that one who perceives to be justified as a real believer can be devoid of good works. James’s point is that we demonstrate our living faith by what we do after we have come to Christ. We are still saved by the Grace of God through faith alone but it has to be followed up with good works. The apparent contradiction is resolved the following way. It's only God who knows whether the person is truly saved or not. After all, God knows everything we have done and will do for eternity. God knows our true thoughts. There is no hiding. So some might say that they are saved by faith alone and they might even do some good works but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are saved. Only God knows and perhaps in most cases so does the individual in question. They will know within themselves whether they truly are saved or not. I know I am. However, there is the question of once saved always saved. Sorry, I don't believe in that, not from our perspectives. A person can change their mind as they have the will to do so. Again, only God knows whether a person is "once saved always saved". We can't know that for sure but I am convinced for the time being that I am. I don't think I will ever turn Christ away from my life. Who knows, I might do so for some strange reasons. At the moment I can't see how. God knows of course.
