Hate to ruin a good story but they are cattle grids.
Kevin would know about them since he was born on a farm and had an early rural upbringing.
Don't know about Qld but we went through a process where all grids on public roads had to be assessed for safety and be numbered by the councils. Many people were forced to upgrade their grids or replace them with gates.
