"A WA-based gold company says the new tax will hit the industry hard.

Focus Minerals chief executive Campbell Baird says the Federal Government has failed to recognise the amount of money companies pour back into local communities.

"While we have been making good money, it's just so important to understand how much money we reinvest back into the community," he said.

"And to be being told in the media that we're making super profits and we're stealing that money from the taxpayers is, I guess, quite offensive to me."

Mr Baird says it is not yet clear how the tax will affect his company's operations."
