    When you inherit shares your cost price is the price they paid for the shares and your buy date is the date they died. You need to hold shares for more than12 months to be able to apply the 50% discount for CGT. My brother died 12/04/2024 so my buy date is 12/04/2024. His average cost price was $54.65 - so that becomes our cost price.

    I was only giving an example of what can happen when you sell high. We have all sold some CBA to wipe out our carried forward losses.
    One daughter and myself have purchased other stocks to diversify our portfolios with the money. The other daughter and my wife are rebuying CBA back.
    We all intend to hold onto CBA for the long term. It is about receiving dividends/income. It was part of the deal when I discussed all this with my brother in making his last will.

    I have held shares for over 50 years and have a pretty good knowledge base about shares, tax, super and estate wind up. Cheers
