    If you bought your shares for $10, $50, $100 or $160 & the price varies by $1.00, you have lost or gained the same amount. The purchase price is irrelevant. You have the opportunity to sell around $160, that is your opportunity cost. The only consideration is capital gains tax & that is where super funds have an advantage.

    If you own CBA shares in your own name CGT becomes a problem but if you can offset that gain by having the opportunity to get out of other loss-making shares, you will have paid no or little CGT in selling some CBA, realised some funds & got out of problem stocks that were never going to be making you any money..
