What is the performance benchmark against most people measure themselves?

Today was a very good day for holders of CBA I know I beat my benchmark (All Ord) by .42%. (alas last 5 days only .1%)
I know it's only one day but it's been a very consistent few years.
you hear a lot about shorting (people say a lot) but you never actually see any individual performance stats and now watching hot copper makes me doubt the average investor really measures any performance at all
