It was a perfectly reasonable request given the privileged position banks enjoy from the government. The constant changing of account types with new fees is a joke and the big 4 should consider themselves extremely lucky that the government didn't bring in bank account number portability similar to mobile number portability in which case banks would have to actually compete instead of just clipping the ticket.
This decision was a huge own goal by the CBA, exactly the publicity they don't need right now.
I didn't see much of the "let the market decide" rhetoric on here when banks had their hands out asking for government deposit guarantees (which still exist btw). They're also only recently getting off the government teat of $100B+ of zero interest COVID loans.
Let the market decide (when it suits). Lol.
