CBA I'm sitting on a $174k cap gain (no discount yet)- I inherited these shares, and the deal was to keep them for income. I have NAB with $120k cap gain also - do I just sell them because they are high. The trucks can come all they like - I will just move off the road and let them pass.
Give plenty of consideration to how you leave your shares/cash to your children - it can have great tax repercussions. If my brother had sold all his shares before he died, he would have paid a $1/2m ?? in tax. Instead of leaving all his shares to me I asked him to split them between my wife two daughters and myself. We have sold some CBA each to wipe out cap losses from years ago. And we all bought back other shares. All the shares were inherited at his cost price (55$) - not the price the day he died ($116). Now they are $155.
My take - CBA has been a better growth stock and NAB a better divie stock. I just accept that.
So, we inherited these shares on the understanding that we keep them. They were a gift to us. I stress that very much to our two daughters 34 and 39 years old . As far as comparing CBA and NAB earnings dividend etc I really don't care - I just rub my hands together and collect the divies. Cheers have a great Xmas - see you in the new year.
