Following his retirement from Anglo Coal, Johan Bloemsma has joined AMCI Southern Africa as Chief Executive Officer reporting to Mike Salamon, Managing Director of AMCI Capital and is responsible for Southern Africa and African investments.

During his 37 years with Anglo American, the last 33 of which have been with Anglo Coal, Johan has operated in various production capacities on the mines, including General Manager positions before moving to the corporate head office where he managed groups of mines as a Consulting Engineer.

For the last 10 years, Johan has been pursuing his passion, which he describes as Strategy Development, and as Head of Projects, has led the Anglo Coal growth strategy both within South Africa and into the global coal arena, most notably Australia.

Now having joined AMCI Southern Africa, he sees the opportunity to use his skills set to feedback into the mining industry, the knowledge and experience gained in a lifetime in the industry, by supporting prospective resource developments to achieve their full potential.

Johan is married to Wendy and they have two children and one grandchild.

Outside of work he plays golf and enjoys the gym and is a keen rugby and cricket supporter.

He then joined the Gencor Group in 1985, initially in coal marketing. In 2001 Billiton merged with BHP to create the world’s largest mining company. Mike was responsible for planning and executing the integration of the two companies. In 2003 he was appointed an Executive Director of BHP Billiton and had responsibility for the global aluminium, copper and nickel businesses as well as the BHP Billiton Group’s health, safety, environment and community affairs, capital project services, purchasing and operating excellence.
