yes, I have seen an open cut over on old mine. Burra in Sth Australia. I saw the digger chomping its way through a wall, then suddenly there was an old working, timbers and supports falling out, but didn't make the slightest difference. The only thing they kept was the old Steam plant as a heritage item.

The mine first closed in 1877, briefly opened again early in the 20th century and for a last time from 1970-1981.

The main body of copper ore formed between two geological faults in broken dolomite rocks.
