I think Appen is a good company but from my limited understanding they are not really a tech company but their competitive advantage is based on people around the world identifying everyday things like trees, see here's the thing, as they keep helping other AI companies improve, wouldn't that eventually cannibalise their own business model? For example, as Google AI becomes proficient at identifying what is a "tree" it wouldn't need Appen anymore, so its not like Appen is providing ongoing service but providing a product that has a finite life that wouldn't ever be needed again once the third party AI develops the algorithm (at least by the same company)?
