The ABC report was focusing on doctors carrying out such treatments where there was no guarantee of success and that the doctors featured were not leaders in the field of stem cell research. I spoke to a number of doctors at a presentation last year and was surprised that such treatments are pretty common in Australia and carried out by GP's. It is pretty damaging that there are no regulations to prohibit such treatments and while there is an off chance that it could bring relief to pain and improve mobility, the cost may be out of reach to some and there is no guarantee that such administering of "stem cells" will work in a long run.
The report should have had a bit more substance and as we have a number of companies in Australia at advanced stages of approval of such treatments for these chronic diseases, it should have featured such experts to give viewers a more balanced reporting of this new technology.
A good example of lack of regulations is in cosmetic surgery where unqualified persons are conducting such surgeries and it took a death in Sydney to open the eyes of regulators.
