China is pulling away from the US in biotech (there's been a lot of news about it recently) and it was raised repeatedly by participants in the FDA roundtable linked to above.

The US has also self-destructed on science leadership by slashing funding across the board affecting university and department research (even ASPI has tried to alert the Australian government to this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to attract the best and brightest septics and others who would have gone to the US otherwise). It'll take them years to recover from the cuts - the talent will be gone and the trust broken.
