My neighbour, who has me as his sole support, rang early yesterday to tell me his foot had swollen badly and was too painful to stand on. Something in my memory, plus the fact he's waiting for heart surgery told me this wasn't good and I told him he had to ring for an ambulance. As he does, he said he'd wait for a day and see how it went. That triggered a memory that he had a condition that could kill him in a couple of days. So I went over and as soon as I saw it I rang for an ambulance. When it didn't come quickly enough I rang them back and said it was getting worse, it could be spreading to the other foot and he was nodding off. So they said they were sending a paramedic till an ambulance was available.
Eventually he turned up and immediately said it was cellulitis. That's when I remembered how I'd heard about it. A relative of a friend had died from it within two days.
My neighbour is in ICU now and hopefully he'll survive till he gets his heart surgery around the end of this month, if they can do it.
