OPERA patrons will be shielded from depictions of smoking — and possibly other harmful activities such as drinking and gambling — after Western Australia’s main opera company signed a sponsorship deal with a government health-promotion agency.
The first victim of the new regime is the 140-year-old opera Carmen, which has been declared too unhealthy for audiences in the state — not for the bullfighting, brawling and murder but because its characters smoke on stage.
What next? Male actors only, obviously because god objects to the display of the female figure in public. Been done before too!
