A couple of things to do with his pay packet.
Firstly, it is not excessive for the size of company that Extract will become in a few years - if it remains a separate entity. It is however a biggish package right now for a company that is consuming money, rather than making it.
Secondly, with his credentials, he would want a decent package here and now, as the possibility still exists for a takeover. There is no incentive for a high calibre person to take an average salary, with the distinct possibility of a short tenure.
