I agree moorookamick increased royalties would be much fairer for Australians than the profits based tax. IMO the mining companies want to move to a profit based tax because it is easier to rort.
The only problem with royalties I can see is that they are levied by state governments and each state sets it's own rate which leads to inconsistencies in what miners pay. I think the royalty rate needs to be the same nationwide.
