I agree the system will eventually collapse, gdp, all empires eventually do. The reason all empires collapse is they run out of resources and people fight over what's left. I've never heard of an empire that collapsed because of its choice of a medium of exchange, but feel free to enlighten me if you know of one.

The collapse will probably not come in our lifetime, but when it does, the best thing to have if you feel a need to survive it will be a stockpile of weapons, food, seeds, knowledge and tools. Sell your gold and buy those.
