I think January 1 is a good date

But

If we want to keep Australia Day as a public holiday of it’s own we probably need a new date - one that represents Australia as we stand today.

To be fair its changed its name & date so many times over just 230 years & only been a public holiday for quarter of a century - i really don’t see what all the fuss is about with changing it
