Cortis, the worm shot up even before rudd opened his mouth because it was sickened by Howard's previous answer and it felt huge relief that Rudd was about to speak. It was, for the worm, a breath of fresh air.
People respond, not only by what a person says, but even well before s/he opens his mouth. A smile (not a frown), a straight, confident demeanour, the previous experience with him/her, all come into play instinctively and immediately we see someone. Then, when we hear what they say, we make judgement on their each and individual utterance. Howard had lost the debate the moment he stepped on that podium. A thousand worms would be doing exactly the same thing.
As for the phone poll afterwards, had Mr At. not stopped my hand, and had we both called, the percentages would have altered -but we both thought that the libs were humiliated enough by their leader and we didn't want to kick the poor sook when he was on the ground and bleeding so profusely!
