This is basic fact as taught in the Australian "citizenship" test.
That unilateral power to change the government was used in the 1970s are most Australians are aware.
Australians and Brits are not citizens.
We are subjects.
Did you know that any treasure found in British soil, even on common ground, automatically belongs to the Queen/King? Even if its in your 'own' land. Failing to declare leads to massive fine or imprisonment.
