I don't think 'the australian culture' is racist at all.
Sure some aussies are what you might define as pure racists - but they would be an extremely small minority.
Part of being part of the oz culture is being ribbed about your country / culture of origin.
Maybe 95% of it is in good humour - but can be taken as highly offensive to people of other cultures that do not share understand or appreciate 'drollness'.
It's their problem, because australia does have a distinct culture - one that (as a birth kiwi)I can appreciate , but one that I also appreciate can be confronting to people of different cultures.
This is where I think the unfortunate concept of multi-culturalism fails. In fact I reckon the concept is a social timebomb to a (so-far) cohesive nation.
Never mind multi-religion states - it's the cultural divides rather than the religious ones that are the potential problem.
It seemed a great idea of the 60's hippies to bring all corners of the world together in an orgy of peace harmony and fusion food.
Thing is - they were thinking that on acid.
