It depends a lot on your own personality and what you find easiest, so it's difficult for me to recommend anything specific to you. But I would recommend you go and read my thread on basic technical analysis in the general/education section. If you can get a handle on those things then you've mastered the main skills required to chart trade. I don't go into the personal skills you need though.

Specifically about spec stocks, the signals that you receive to buy or sell are muted compared to the big boys because of the lower level of trade occurring so you need to have pretty sharp skills.
