I suspect that the timing of the contract will not be linked/connected to the share price in any way shape of form. I hope bigger and better things are going on than that....
I also suspect that rather than take a stake in BHP the Chinese might increase their stake in RIO (which will convert to BHP anyway) - but it's excellent sabre rattling/face saving stuff. Don't forget that the politicos took over the iron ore negotiations because they thought the steel makers weren't doing a good enough deal/driving hard enough. Lots of face to save from an internal political point of view.
