I'm actually a lifelong environmentalist since the age of eleven, and if there is one thing that I am absolutely 100% for it is nuclear energy for baseload power.
Even ignoring the huge carbon emissions of fossil fuel power stations, the amount of destruction caused by methylmercury emissions from coal fired power plants makes the consequences Chernobyl and Fukushima pale in comparison.
The difference is that the damage caused by coal is slow, steady and utterly enormous, whereas the damage caused by nukes comes in big hits ever decade or two, with no impact in between.
