Hi DC,
The idea that Datt got a rails run on inside information and liquidated a position based on that is something I struggle with. It assumes all the other people with equal knowledge (ie, every other insider) has stood to one side, watched it happen, and not said a word. Given the known differences between some board members I would find it surprising that would happen. Even in the wild west of junior explorers.
Datt not wanting to have significant capital tied up in a company with a board who he had decided were completely at odds with his strategic direction and his views on rights issuances is something I can understand completely. When your position is as large as his had become I don't think there is any particularly easy way to rip off the bandaid. It's a junior explorer after all, not BHP.
I agree with deanoman3000 when he says "If I was to speculate one of his main issues, I would guess it has to do with not drilling to test depth. It’s obvious the board is trying to determine the length of the structure, and at the rate they’re going it could be a year before they go for depth. Probably way too long for his liking."
I'm going to quote DonnieDarko here also, first as I think he's said it better and more concisely than I every could, and second because another geo who I talk with who is familiar with the project and style of mineralisation told me exactly the same thing prior to Donnie posting his comment;
When drilling sub-parallel to the structure in a more distal position relative to the main control, a drop-off in grades is expected. While the grades at this position did decline, the thickness and continuity remained consistent with the drill hole above. This location’s lower performance doesn’t diminish the overall scale of the opportunity—shear-hosted gold systems are known for their pinching and swelling, distributing grade in non-uniform ways. I wouldn’t be surprised if future drilling below this position reveals a return of higher grades. This looks like a major long lived multi phase structure, this hole was only testing 300m at a more distal position.
The market’s reaction, wiping significant value off the market cap based on this result, has far exceeded what the geology suggests and is more influenced by sentiment surrounding boardroom dynamics with Datt than the actual geological potential.
Frankly there is only one person who ultimately knows why Datt sold, and that is Datt. Everything else is just speculation, as you noted. If people wish to sell, they should. If people wish to buy, they should. Time will be the judge. If the gold is sitting there, it's waiting whether Datt is on the register or not. No one knows. It may be the right approach to grow laterally along shear first, or maybe going for "gold" with some deep holes would be better. None of us can truly know. Again, time will be the judge.
Speaking for myself I appreciate your thoughts and anaylsis DC, and look forward to reading more of your work. It's good we can get all points of view and work through them, at the end it only makes all of us better off in the long run to see it from all angles, and then refine our own frameworks for decision making.
Cheers, BD.
