Profit and cash flow are different things - don't get them confused. Earnings are just the starting point for calculating the net cash flow from operations you need to be adjusted by accruals (accounts receivable, payables, inventory and other stuff). The P/E ratio is Price (which assumes that the number of shares remains constant) divided by earnings/share (not cash flow). Best to think of P/E ratio as the number of years earnings/share takes to pay off the share price (assuming the number of shares remains constant)
