1. charting is a self fulfilling prophecy, people look at charts and buy and sell stocks based on them.
2. aside for that, obviously a company requires good news for a stock to rise, but the charts provide the framework and template for the movements. when investing in a company you would hope that they will have good news coming out on a periodic basis which is why you invest. the news released today doesnt justify a 20% hike in the sp but because of the charts the sp had the space to move following chart patterns.
