You first decompose the price into its various dominant cycles of short term, medium term and long term cycles, so that if you are trading short term, you will want to look at the short term cycles...and if long term, you will want to look at the long term cycles, but since all cycles are interacting at one time, you re-combine them into one cycle called cycle sum to consider the overall effect of all the cycles operating at one time. The chart you see is plotted from the slope of the cycle sum. This is the equivalent of the Q-Phase oscillator of the SSA program.
