Shorts increase as the SP rises- it becomes safer to short because when prices are high there is more chance of the price going down than up. Conversely, as SPs decrease shorts increase- it becomes riskier to short because when prices are low there is more chance of going up than down. Something like that. Based on observation only- and thinking about what I have observed- not on experience because I have never shorted.
But we say buy low and sell high- so shorting should follow the same maxim- short high and buy back low.
So, Sabrine, if shorters increased on 16 July then that could be because prices are now higher than they had been just previously- all else being equal.
Happy to be contradicted by someone who knows what she is talking about.
