they can m8, i've held a stock before that was heavily targeted by shorters, it slowly trended down for months, if market is up big it'll get an initial push then slowly go down for the day to be well below the opening price. shorters know how to drive the price down. if price keeps going down big money will likely lighten their holdings, contributing to further declines.
