If you are a long term holder, reality is you are sitting on a paper loss at least from a yearly 'paper' point of view.
And that 'paper' point of view represents opportunity cost.
Very long term holders can gleefully state that they are still make a profit on paper, but they cannot gleefluly exclaim that they have made profits to offset opportunity cost in recent years.
