Felixhamish, charting is pretty daunting as there is a vast array of indicators and techniques. Truth told most indicators that come out of a box wont make you money by simply applying common rules. Systems or techniques published in books today have already been used for several decades and become common knowledge and less effective (not for the authors!)

If you want to start from scratch, the bare bones so to speak, I would recommend you picking up a copy of

A Complete Guide to Trading Profits by Alexander Paris

Alexander Paris was an economist who ran Barrington Research out of Chicago. He penned this book I think in 1970 and has been to Australia many moons ago.

It gives you the skeleton and clears up a lot of the waffle about fundamental and charting approaches. It is very easy to read and will give you a firm understanding of charting. I have a battered old copy that I read too long ago but it is a great introduction.
