There are some highly sophisticated ways of using TA and some skilled people using them, I am not one of them, but do enjoy and use the basics. I agree I find the higher the liquidity and turnover the more reliable the TA. I have bought stocks a few times soley on TA (ie WBC) but mostly use both. (I'm a big fan of Candlesticks and have been pleased at some of my calls using them)

As for XCD -I got into this one based on fundamentals.

I think its a cracker play, more so at current prices.
