Yay - Im back after an...ahem..hiatus !

Why would they use it and not their 3G ?

Well, there are some valid reasons:

1) Wifi is (usually) quicker than 3G
2) Save on data allotment - moreso for handheld devices than laptops and/or 3G dongle plans
3) In case of Apple devices, most app updates >20mb can only be done via wifi - NOT 3G
4) People wanting to VPN via work portals (wont work over 3G unless you have dongle-based networking)
5) Wifi could be advantageous over an existing 3G service with blackspots - not usually for Telstra, but Shloptus (Optus) and Voadfail (Vodaphone) it will apply

Of course, there is some caveats:

1) Technology needs to be resilient, reliable and big enough to cater for demand
2) Marketing to local communiity needs to happen
