I think you'll find the shorts have reduced because there's no value shorting around 116 running into a brick-wall of buying.

If you watch the price-action, even to the second, sellers are selling, and the buyers are buying, but they are not pressuring the SP upward, they are sitting on their heels waiting for the sellers to sell into their limit orders.

I believe it's a concerted effort to accumulate as many long positions as possible at current levels, before a rally leading into the Oct 27 announcement.
