Believe it or not but many traders only use charts to enter and exit stocks. They don't know what a company does, anything about its financials etc. To them charts are an indicator of direction of the trend and they trade the probability that what the chart is telling them is correct.
I prefer to use them for back up to research.
A chart is just visible representation of people's decision to buy or sell. Much can be gleaned from this information which comes in the form of indicators like volume,money flow, candle sticks etc etc. Just another tool but a very useful one IMO.
