    There are many ways shorting can and is used in stock market.

    Probably less then 10% shorts in global markets are opened in simple way most people on HC imagine.

    You can short stock on multiyear lows and still make money despite stock rallying 100%, without ever closing short position.
    Hence why a lot of Tesla shorts never closed and good portion of them made fortune on Tesla rally.

    In other words:
    Shorting is like a smart phone. And just like a smart phone: shorting isn't used just to place voice calls. There are many other buttons and apps
