I don't have detailed information or knowledge about process, so this might be wrong:
Tech you talk about is actually chemistry. Applying agents and reagents to improve brine mixture evaporation and purification process. And you get battery grade carbonate as result. Normally carbonate would be sent to purification plant to get battery grade by those that don't have technology/means to do it.
So it's during and after pond process. But you need large ponds to evaporate larger quantities of brine mix.
