If those that exited months ago to preserve capital were "sheep" (who possibly re-invested in rising stocks elsewhere) then those that hung on to watch their capital continue to shrivel might qualify as turkeys I suppose, me included. No. 1 reason for long term portfolio failure is not pre determining losses.
