The proper use of a spirometer requires a forced manoeuvre (deep inhale, rapid exhale) and when an asthmatic is symptomatic this can be uncomfortable and difficult procedure for them to do (if done properly at all). The wheezo requires no additional effort and would allow an asthmatic to monitor whether their symptoms are getting better or worse.
