I am not chartist either but asked the same question years ago, many years ago and couldn't understand how technical analysis can predict market behaviour.
Until a very good friend of mine who was a genius project management professional answered my question in a way that I understood.
Bottom line was " any good's spot price is the result of all market forces actions" that includes: supply, demand, news affect, speculation affect, politics affect, geopolitics affects, market players psychology, seasonal affects, particular weekday affect and so on.
Now, if you are making a chart of the spot price, then that chart is an interpretation of all them affects, and if you are studying that chart, it means that you are studying combined affect of every single force that is affecting the price.
That was the point that I started respecting technical analysis a lot.
