Technically it's not a free fall.
A free fall is a special type of motion in which the only force acting upon an object is gravity. Objects that are said to be undergoing free fall are not encountering a significant force of air resistance.
By your free fall analogy, there shouldn't be any buying whatsoever (when a price plummets like 50% on open as can be seen in biotechs when their clinical trials don't produce positive results)
The fact that there is buying means there is air resistance, thus it's not free falling. I believe the correct term you're looking for is 'correction', which is just a euphemism for losing a lot of money very rapidly (that's a line by Peter Lynch, I take no credit for the comedy within)
