probably because they werent using modern techniques. Look at what BRK and all those around it are doing, horizontal drilling and fracking. If it didnt add up, all those expert major oil companies surrounding BRK wouldnt bother would they.
Every well into good reservoirs = payday.
PUD rises in value = Sale of acreage at multiples of acquisition cost
Acquire larger seed acres
Repeat. = Growth star.
