No permanent MRRT, PM says

Speaking with 2GB radio, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been asked again about reports in The Australian that says the government is considering a temporary tax on thermal coal and gas producers.

The PM reiterated “all sensible measures” remained on the table, but ruled out a permanent minerals resource rent tax (MRRT).

Asked by host Ben Fordham whether that included a mining tax, Albanese replied: “I’m not quite sure what a mining tax is, besides a slogan”.

“We’re not looking at an MRRT and that was just speculation by The Australian,” he responded.

“There are some limits on what we can do. We have contracts with other nations for supply; we don’t intend, of course, to interfere with any of that.

“So that limits what options are on the table, but we’ll work issues through, and we’ll work them through in a way that provides maximum relief for people that we can achieve in in a practical way.”

He said Queensland assets were state-owned and that there were a lot of regulatory measures in NSW that would need to be dealt with.

“We can’t act alone, but we’ll act in conjunction with state and territory governments particularly on the east coast, as well as with industry.”
