The chart below lists the % of daily short sales for BHP since the start of 2009 - sourced from the ASX at:

Red circles have been drawn on the chart to show days when shortsales were 27% or more. Unfilled price gaps have been shown in light yellow boxes.
So how much can be spent in one day shorting BHP? On May 25 short sales were 44% of 14.6m => $218m [at $34 ps].
IMO it's interesting to note that commencing May12 BHP has been shorted at least 27% every trading day.
