No real rational explanation for gaps filling, but the collective mindset that gaps will / should fill acts as a type of self-fulfilling prophecy which often drives the phenomenon to it's conclusion. Now that the gap has closed, we are - as you accurately point out - in no better FA situation. However, the collective psychology of where the price will gravitate to next changes. We may now see a more confident move upwards without the gap weighing on the collective hive-mind which creates SPs.
