I have to say I disagree with your statement of "hope is the denial of reality".
The dictionary definition is:"A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen."
If a person is diagnosed with cancer and hopes that a course of treatment will help them are they denying the reality they have cancer?
Similarly, if a team is working on a prospective new treatment they hope will benefit patients, are they also in denial of reality?
Hope is an integral part of the human condition that drives us to seek the betterment of our lives.
Sorry if that sounds a bit pompous :)
