I could provide multiple examples to the contrary. For instance, Howard Hughes built his famous aircraft from wood as, during WWII, there was shortage of metals (yes, pretty much all metals) and the US government provided incentives for using alternatives, as metals were not available to keep the war machine going. They actually incentivised Hughes to build aircraft from wood due to the shortage of alternatives. I can see analogies with current situation (wars everywhere).
